COPD – A chronic disease of the respiratory tract

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive condition where the airways narrow, making breathing increasingly difficult. Typical symptoms include chronic cough, increased mucus production, and shortness of breath, especially during physical exertion. Long-term smoking or exposure to harmful substances are the most common causes. COPD often develops gradually and often goes unnoticed in its early stages.

Assessment and diagnosis

In our practice, we rely on comprehensive diagnostic steps for the precise assessment of COPD. Lung function testing is of central importance here to measure the extent of airway constriction. Additional examinations such as blood tests or imaging procedures help to determine the severity of COPD and rule out other lung diseases.

COPD is frequently accompanied by other conditions (comorbidities) such as cardiovascular problems, diabetes, or osteoporosis. These accompanying diseases must be treated as well to ensure comprehensive care. We place great importance on identifying these comorbidities early and integrating them into the treatment plan.

Treatment

The treatment of COPD aims to alleviate symptoms, slow the progression of the disease, and improve quality of life. Quitting smoking is essential to prevent further damage to the airways. Inhaled medications are used to dilate the airways and reduce inflammation.

Additionally, in advanced cases, oxygen therapy or specialised pulmonary exercise and rehabilitation therapy may be beneficial to improve your lung function and quality of life.

In advanced COPD, which may be accompanied by pulmonary emphysema, we work closely with specialized external centers. This collaboration allows us to offer you advanced therapies, such as endoscopiv or surgical lung volume reduction procedures.

Holistic approach

In addition to the symptomatic treatment of the lungs, we include all relevant health factors in your treatment plan. Through close collaboration with specialized centers and consideration of comorbidities, we offer you comprehensive and coordinated treatment.
